Science Fair 2019 Information and Criteria

This year the sixth grade will host a Science Fair.  The main objective of this Science Fair is to demonstrate their knowledge of the Scientific Method or the Engineering Design Process.  This year’s fair will be held on Friday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  This is always a wonderful learning experience for the students, as well as a chance for them to investigate something that interests them personally.  This is a big project and when done in steps and allotting the right amount of time the results are nothing short of amazing. I am sending this email after Thanksgiving Break to get the ideas flowing and test out some ideas.

I have already begun talking to the sixth grade about their projects and would like to use this letter to begin communication with parents about expectations for the Science Fair.  This project is done at home and I will provide the students with checklists prior to due dates to ensure that they are using their time wisely to plan for the fair.   Parents and others are encouraged to help students with their project, with students doing the majority of the work.  As students are working on their science fair project please keep in mind that the internet is a wonderful resource for you to use in choosing a project, researching, as well as throughout the project. One of my favorite websites to research projects is sciencebuddies.com.

If the project is an engineering project, they must use the format on the attached sheet for their poster board Engineering Design Method.  If the project is a Science Experiment, they must use the Scientific Method Criteria on the attached sheet for their poster board. The poster board with the information needs to be a 3ft by 4ft tri-fold board found at Walmart, Walgreens, or any craft store.

All of the information and worksheets are located on my website under the tab, Science Fair Criteria

With this being such a large project, I will be doing periodic checks with students in Science Lab to make sure that work is being done at home and turned in by the due dates.  If you have any questions please contact me either via email at martinellim@academycharter.org or call and leave me a message with the school.

As for now the most important pieces of information for you are:

·        The Sixth Grade Science Fair will be Friday, January 10th in the cafeteria from 2:30-3:20 p.m.

·        Topics for the science fair are due by Monday December 9th from all sixth graders but may be handed in as soon as possible. This sheet is graded worth 10 pts.

  • The winner of the ACS Science Fair will move on to the Denver Metro Regional Science Fair to be held on Friday, February 28th at the University of Colorado Denver.

·        Also, remember this is an at home project. It will be worth a project grade.  Have fun with it !
