Dear ACS Families and Friends,
ACS parents, students, and staff members nominated
three teachers for the 2007-2008 Apple Awards.
These wonderful, talented teachers are JoEllen
Solita, Mary Martinelli, and Ryan Gudmundson! The
entire staff voted and chose JoEllen Solita to
represent ACS at the district award ceremony! (I
wish we could have sent all 3!) If you have a chance,
please congratulate these teachers for a job well
done.
Our Harvest Parties will be tomorrow, Friday,
November 2. Students are NOT allowed to dress in
costume for this party. Last week on Friday, they
were allowed to dress up as their favorite book
character in conjunction with the book fair! Please
check with your classroom teachers for party times
and events. Many fun events and crafts have been
planned for these parties. Hope your children enjoy
them! Thank you to all of the parents who helped
plan these parties and brought in the many treats
and items to make them fun!
On Tuesday evening, our SAC members were invited
to a District Advisory Committee meeting. Kristen
Wenaas, Ellen Neal-Aiken, Robin Warnke, and I were
able to attend this informative meeting. We will
share all of this information at our next SAC meeting
on November 28 at 5 p.m. Please join us in the
library for this meeting.
Academy Charter School will be offering a Middle
School Information Night on Thursday, November
15, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the gym. We encourage
all parents of 4th and 5th graders to attend this
meeting regarding what we offer here at ACS.
Please remember that we will not have school on
November 9 due to a change in our teacher in-service
day. Our teachers will be attending a Core Knowledge
Conference in Colorado Springs on the 9th and 10th.
We will have a regular school day on November 12
instead. Please mark your calendars!
We value our parents, families and community members.
If you have comments, concerns, or a great idea
to share, please feel free to contact me. Thank
you for sharing your wonderful children with us!

Fun Fact
The word “writing” may have had its
origin in the Olde English word, writan, which
meant to scratch. Only two words in the English
language end in “gry”.
Do you know what they are? Angry and hungry!

Dear Families and Friends of ACS,
For those middle school parents who didn’t
make it to conferences and have not picked up your
student’s report card, we will be mailing
these out on Friday. You will need to come into
the office to pick up your GUID which is your
access number to log into Infinite Campus and the
way to get into the parent portal. Each parent
must sign for their own GUID number. For those
of you who came to conferences and received your
GUID
but
didn’t
get to access the portal, due to our server issues,
please
click
on the link below to have access to the log-in
directions. We also will have this information
posted on our website as well. LINK
TO PORTAL DIRECTIONS-
If you do not have access to a computer at home,
you may set an appointment to come to the elementary
lab during afternoon carpool to log into the
portal. Please call the office to schedule an appointment.
Special Note: The middle school teachers would
like me to remind students and parents that all
middle school students need to have a book to read
at all times for all classes. Many times when students
finish a test early, or have academic assistance
they do not have a book to read. Please help us
by ensuring your student has a current book to
read!
As always, November begins to bring about many
upcoming events here at ACS. Here are some of them
you need to be aware of…
- We had our Virtue Assembly for October
this past Wednesday, October 31st, at 8:50 in
the cafeteria for elementary students and at
2:55 in
the cafeteria for Middle school students. We
also honored our Middle School students who made
the
Dean’s List and Honor Roll at this assembly.
Students received a certificate and their names
will be listed on a scroll which will be placed
on the bulletin board as you enter the middle school
wing. Click here for these
names….
- Harvest
Parties will be held Friday, November 2nd.
The middle school grade level coordinators
have contacted their grade level parents
to let them know what assistance we need with
food,
games, and activities. If you can assist, please
contact
Christi Fuller-6th grade coordinator, Tracy
Belk-7th grade coordinator, or Barb Ireland-8th
grade
coordinator.
- The Student Council is going to be
sponsoring a Harvest Dance this Friday, November
2,
from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $5.00 per
student as
well as a donation of 2 cans of food or 2-non-perishable
items. Please remembe,r this is for
ACS Middle School students only! . CLICK
HERE for a flyer.
- There will be a Middle School Information
Night on Thursday, November 15th, from 6:00-7:30
p.m. in the ACS Gym. The theme for this night
is “ACS
Middle School Paving the Road to Excellence” and
we are inviting all parents of 4th, 5th, and
6th graders to attend. More information will
be forthcoming!
Please mark your calendar for this informational
night!
- We will be having our second Bully-free
assembly on Friday, November 16th.
I would like to thank those parents who came to
our drop-in time in the gym with our middle school
teachers. As a parent of a senior in high school,
I also attended my daughter’s parent-teacher
conferences that week. Although I had no concerns,
I wanted to let her teachers know how much I
appreciate their hard work and dedication to
inspiring our youth and providing them knowledge
that will serve them well later in life. If you
weren’t able to attend conferences this
quarter, please be sure to mark your calendar
for our 3rd quarter sessions. I know our wonderful
teaching staff would love to hear some encouraging
words as well as have an opportunity to meet
their students’ parents! I encourage those
of you who did attend to provide us any feedback
you have regarding the following changes to our
conferences: Having later appointments on Thursday,
and having a group setting in the gym for middle
school conferences on Friday. Your feedback will
assist us in determining how we set these appointments
for 3rd quarter conferences. Please email me
your thoughts on this at petersk@academcharter.org
or you can always include them in your parent
survey!
Once again, I thank you for your support of ACS,
our staff and our students!

It is the time of year to be thinking
about the flu again! The flu can range from a mild
to a severe illness, and can even lead to death.
Fortunately, most people who get the flu will recover
in one to two weeks.
Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is
a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza
virus. It attacks the respiratory tract (nose,
throat and lungs). Influenza usually comes on suddenly
and may include these symptoms: fever (usually
high), headache, tiredness (can be extreme), dry
cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle
aches. The flu and the common cold have similar
symptoms, but in general the flu is worse. People
with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy
nose.
The flu is spread when a person who has the virus
coughs, sneezes or otherwise sends the flu virus
into the air. The virus enters the nose, throat
or lungs of a person and begins to multiply, causing
the other person to become ill. It may also be
spread when an infected person touches a surface
and then another person touches that surface and
then their own nose, mouth or eyes. Some viruses
can live up to 2 hours on surfaces such as doorknobs
and tables.
A person can spread the flu starting one day before
he or she feels sick. People can continue to pass
the flu virus to others for up to seven days after
symptoms occur and sometimes even longer. Symptomatic
children should not attend school. To help decrease
the spread of the flu, please keep your student
home from school if he/she has a fever or has had
a fever in the past 24 hours.
To protect yourself and your family from the spread
of the flu:
-
Get a flu shot.
-
Avoid
close contact with people who are sick.
-
Stay home or keep your student home if sick.
-
Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing
or sneezing then throw the tissue away.
-
Wash hands frequently.
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
-
Get plenty of sleep, physical activity, drink
plenty of water, and eat good foods.
-
Don’t share drinks (water
bottles, soda, etc.) or eating utensils.
What to do if you get the flu: rest, drink plenty
of liquids, avoid using alcohol and tobacco, and
you may want to take medication to relieve the
symptoms. A virus causes influenza, so antibiotics
don’t work to cure it. If started within
the first two days of the flu, antiviral medications
may decrease symptoms and shorten the duration
of illness. Do not give aspirin to a child or teenager
who has flu-like symptoms.
If your student is getting over an illness and
is no longer acutely ill (no fever or vomiting
for 24 hours), she/he can attend school.
Many people use the term “stomach flu” to
describe illnesses with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Many different viruses or bacteria can cause these
symptoms. The flu is a respiratory disease and
not a stomach or intestinal disease.

Travel the World with Reading
Second
quarter we will be exploring the wonderful world
of reading. The classes will be working
together to earn AR points and see if they
can “travel around the world.” Students
in 4th-6th grades will also be trying to read
various genres to complete a reading passport.
Younger students will read fun stories from
around the world. All classes who complete
their world trip in AR points will receive
a popcorn and movie party at the end of the
quarter. Library lessons will focus on exploring
various genres and beginning research as we
explore fascinating facts about the continents
and countries we visit.
