Dear ACS Families and Friends,

On September 28th, our teachers were trained in C-Snap. C-Snap is a computerized tool for analyzing assessment data. Teachers learned how to disaggregate CSAP data, look at cohort groups of students’ data, and analyze low areas in the CSAP data. This information can help drive their instruction and target specific interventions for students. Teachers were able to see their individual strengths and weaknesses as well as trends as a school. An articulation time was also given to vertically and horizontally align their curriculum with the grade level above and below them. This invaluable information will lead us as a school to academic excellence as well as achieving our SIP goals.

The ACS staff and I would also like to thank PTO for providing us with a wonderful breakfast on our in-service day! It is wonderful not only to feed our minds but also our bodies with such wonderful food. Thank you for your support!

As a gentle reminder, we have noticed that the number of students who are tardy has been steadily increasing. When students are tardy, they have to stop at the office and receive a tardy slip before going on to class. The attendance secretary then has to go in to each of these student’s attendance screens and mark them tardy—as you can see, this is time consuming for everyone and it is also an added interruption when the students walk into their classrooms late.

I am requesting parents to make every effort to have your student here every morning between 8:05 and 8:20. This will enhance our instructional time with your students. If we can’t stem this tide of tardy students, I will be forced to come up with some other consequences. Thank you for your support in this matter.

“Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.”

Dear Families and Friends of ACS,

I can definitely tell that fall has arrived as I am driving into Castle Rock and see all the scrub oak changing to their fall hues; it makes me realize this is such a gorgeous time of year! We also have many upcoming events and I want to keep you posted by noting them below:

  • The Scholastic Book Fair will be here the last full week of October during parent/teacher conferences. Please don’t forget to stop by and see the great collection of books that will be there! Check for information from our librarian later in this newsletter!
  • Parent-teacher conferences are approaching and our teachers in grades K-5 have been collecting the sign up sheets from their students. If you have not returned your slip, elementary teachers will be assigning a time for you as we are trying to align sibling conferences as well. Conferences will be for a 20 minute time frame, so if you have more to discuss, please be sure to set up another time to meet with your teacher while you’re at conferences.
  • In middle school, we have a set day for “scheduled appointments” which will be on Thursday, October 25th. Friday, October 26th, will be a “drop-in” day where parents can come by and visit with their student’s middle school teacher(s). Individual conferences will be held in teacher’s classrooms on Thursday and “Drop-In” Conferences will be held in the gym on Friday. Our Specials’ teachers will have a sign there indicating where you can meet with them. We have mailed out conference sign-up timeframes to those students who are being requested for individual conferences on Thursday. If you received one of these requests, please return them to the office ASAP so we can align these conferences with elementary siblings and with the teachers. After we have received your timeframes, you will be notified by mail of your confirmed conference time. Please note: If you want to schedule a specific time to meet with a middle school teacher, please call the office the week of October 8th to schedule a time for Thursday only.
  • Harvest Parties will be held this year on Friday, November 2nd. Elementary teachers will be sending out information regarding what time their class party will be held, as well as how to help in either this week’s newsletter or in next week’s letter. Classroom Coordinators for Middle School need to contact Dean Peters regarding the Middle School Harvest Parties.
  • These are the window dates for CSAP Reading in third grade and for the rest of CSAP testing for grades 3-8.

    Grade 3 Reading Only:
    02/18/08 through 02/29/08
Grades 3-10: The rest of the tests
    03/10/08 through 04/11/08

Please refrain from scheduling doctor appointments or extra time for Spring Break during these timeframes as it is very important for students to be in school for testing. Research shows that students who test in their normal classroom environment do better than those who do make-up tests later.

I hope you all have a wonderful Colorado fall weekend and enjoy the colors of the season!

Our ACS volunteers are wonderful! I would like to thank the volunteers who came to install the pre-school playground equipment last Saturday. The pre-school children are enjoying their new playground! Also, I would like to thank all the volunteers who are coaching sports here at ACS right now—boys soccer, volleyball and cross country—thank you for volunteering your time to offer a sports opportunity to our students.

Governing Board News
Sept 13, 2007

GB Meeting on Monday night

The Governing Board will hold its monthly general meeting this coming Monday evening, October 8, at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. We will have a working session at 5 p.m. Traditionally, the board meets the second Monday of each month (with the exception of November, when we will meet on a Tuesday). These meetings are open to the public – we invite you to attend.

School Advisory Council (SAC)

As you’re seeing this week, the SAC election process is underway to identify our parent SAC members. Thank you for endorsing the candidates that are volunteering for these positions. This is a required step for a compliant School Advisory Council, which determines if we receive the School Improvement funding. Our next meeting will be next Wednesday, October 10, from 5:00-6:00 in the school library. Dean Brown will be discussing the School Improvement Plan that was just completed and submitted to the district. Babysitting will also be provided by 8th graders raising money for their 8th grade trip. (A small donation is requested which goes directly to their trip expenses.) We hope to see you there for some snacks and discussion on ACS academics!

Enrichment Programming Committee

The Gifted and Talented Initiative Committee, now known as the Enrichment Programming Committee, is meeting on Thursday, October 11, at 4:15 in the ACS Conference Room. The committee will discuss where we are regarding hiring an Enrichment Facilitator and exploring different after-school enrichment programs to provide to ACS students. All parents and staff members are welcome to attend.

Online Parent Survey Coming Soon

The Communications Committee, along with Dean Brown and Dean Peters, have reviewed and revised questions for the upcoming fall parent survey. Next, the board will look over survey questions as well. The survey will be available for parents to fill out one of two ways: either at ACS in the elementary computer lab during Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 25 and 26; or via email to your home. Parents will have from October 29 through November 9 to complete the survey online at their homes.

Photo Re-Takes Scheduled

Next Wednesday, October 10th, we will have Skow Photography here to do our picture re-takes. Look for picture packets in Friday folders this week with flyers for re-take day. Picture packets need to be returned for the picture re-takes. Just have your student bring the packet to school next Wednesday to have their pictures re-done.
