Dear
Family and Friends of ACS,
It just doesn’t seem possible that Winter Break is merely
a week away! It seems that first semester has just flown by!
Our K-2 Winter Program was Tuesday of this week already, and
dare I say that it was just fantastic! I would
like to give our Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade
teachers a big ‘thank
you’ for creating and organizing this wonderful program.
Thank you also to our Third Grade, Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade
teachers who have also created and organized tonight’s
Winter Program. I know it will also be terrific! I
would also like to thank Mrs. Marsh-Rose, Mrs. James, Mrs.
Barrette, Mrs.
Schneller, Ms. Muckley and Mr. Ross for helping the classroom
teachers make these programs come together. I appreciate all
the parents that helped pick up the chairs after the program;
it was a huge help to us!
Our office has had quite a few calls recently about school delays and school
closures. Please refer to your Parent/Student Handbook, page 29, as it provides
information regarding where you should look to see if our school will be delayed
or cancelled. We do follow the Douglas County School’s decision for a delayed
start or school cancellation due to inclement weather. With Douglas County being
such a big district now, and if necessary, the District will sometimes communicate
by referring to different sections of Douglas County. On 9News, we will follow
either ‘All Douglas County’ or ‘Castle Rock Schools’ and
on the Douglas County website (http://www1.dcsdk12.org) we are referenced as
the West Area.
Tuesday, January 3, is a testing day for our students. Please
read the following information so you are well informed regarding
how this important day will work:
Elementary parents- Please
come in and sign up for a testing time outside your student(s)
classroom.
MS parents- Middle School
testing will be similar to the testing at the beginning
of this year. Some of our students will be
individually tested, while others will be tested in
a group. Please call our office on Monday, December 5th,
or as soon
as you can after that day, to schedule a time for your
student to come in for testing. The office will let you know
if your
student will be tested individually or in a group,
the times available and how long the testing will take.
Eighth
Grade Parents Only: Dean Peters and I are getting
closer to an answer as to whether some student’s schedules can
be changed to move some students into classes that do not have
mixed math subjects. We will update you in next week’s
Newsletter as to our success or failure.

Now it really is feeling and looking like December!
I know everyone has so many extra things to do this time of
year and I am so appreciative of the folks that carve out a
little time to come and help at our school. Please take some
candy from the basket on the office counter---just a little
treat for our volunteers in December!
We finally have some of our volunteer’s pictures up
on the bulletin board. This is a work in progress, so more “star” volunteers
will be coming. These are volunteers who have completed their
20 hour commitment and many have gone far, far above this---thank
you for Making a Difference at ACS!
Sean and Jennifer Templeton have been very successful selling
grocery certificates on Fridays. I would like to get a couple
of volunteers to help with this project. If you can come in
to the school around 3:00 and help them, please let me know.
They have been selling a lot of these grocery certificates
and this is such an easy way for us to raise funds.
I would like to thank Joni Kitching for volunteering as pianist
for the 3-5th grade music program. I hope you had a chance
to enjoy these wonderful programs the students performed. I
would also like to thank Allan Ross again for delivering and
returning the risers that were used for the programs and Kenneth
Knopp also helped unload the risers---thanks for helping us
out.
I am also looking for a couple of volunteers and their students
to help deliver gifts to the Castle Rock Care Center on Thursday
or Friday, December 15th or 16th. If you would like to do this,
please let me know.
Lisa Arnell, has requested a couple of volunteers who would
be willing to attend home basketball games and run the game
clock and keep the score book. If you can help with this, please
contact Lisa at arnelll@academycharter.org.
The following families have completed their 20 hour commitment
at this time: Pam and Eliot Hardy, Kendra and Arthur
Landry, Laurie and Jeff Long, Jenni and Bryan Schaffer, Kristin
and
Wayne Sidney. Congratulations!
We have logged a total of 4,302 volunteer hours through the
end of November----way to go!! Anne Belfrage

Council News
Student Council has been busy this past month! We held the
Middle School Talent Show on November 18th and it turned out
to be a great hit! We had a lot of great talent show up that
night but the three that came out on top were:
- 1st Place: Makenzie Schriner–Playing the
fiddle
- 2nd Place: Britta Strom and Kaleigh Schriner–Singing
- 3rd Place: Breanna Chadwick–Playing the piano
Congratulations! These four worked very hard on their acts
and it paid off. Each finalist received a gift certificate
to Sonic. Enjoy!
Student Council will also be holding three upcoming events.
On December 9th there will be a Snowball dance. It is semi-formal
and will cost $3.00 for admission. We hope to see you all there
because it will be a lot of fun! Our second upcoming event
that is tentatively planned will be a double feature movie
night on January 13th. The movies are still in the process
of being determined. We also have a Valentine's Day dance planned
for February 10th. These events should be a blast and we hope
to see all of our middle school students there!
