Dear Family and Friends of ACS,

I just love this time of year! The holiday season is a time for sharing and giving and it seems to just bring out the best in all of us; but it is also a very busy time. Below I have provided you with all of our very important school dates through the rest of November until Winter Break, and a few January dates. Some of these dates are on our school calendar; however, some are dates that have just been scheduled, like our Winter Programs and Plays. Please look through the dates below and make note of the dates that pertain to you.

I am planning a Parent Workshop for sometime in January. I am meeting with some staff members who would like to help me with this workshop. If you have any ideas about what you would like to learn (how to support your child in reading, writing, math test taking skills, etc.), please email them to me at nelsonk@academycharter.org and I will do my best to try to honor all requests I receive.

Eighth Grade Parents Only: Dean Peters is in the process of taking a look at some data to possibly make a schedule change. She is investigating the possibility of making a change regarding the way the current math classes are grouped in order to better facilitate our philosophy of differentiation in math for our eighth graders. Currently, we have two classes and they have both Algebra and Pre-Algebra classes being taught. However, the student dynamics have changed since the beginning of the year. As you know, student success is important to all of us at ACS and this is what is driving us toward this possible change for second semester. If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to contact Dean Peters.

Our volunteers at ACS really rock! We have so many parents investing volunteer hours here at the school lately. You are sending a valuable message to your children.

As we approach Thanksgiving I want you all to know that I am privileged to work with all of you and I am grateful for your help and support. We are in the process of the vision and hearing screenings today and we have a wonderful group of volunteers helping with this important screening.

I would like to recognize Shalea Hardison and Brad Wann who worked as coaches for the girls’ volleyball team this year. The soccer team was coached by Leo Lech, a former ACS parent. Please take time to thank these folks who spent many hours helping their teams.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and continue to “Make a Difference” at ACS!

Lost and Found Overflowing!

Please check the Lost and Found located in the school cafeteria. There are many lunch boxes and items of clothing in there that need to be brought home. Diane Bodiford will be taking everything that is left before Thanksgiving. Please check or have your students check for missing items

Grocery Certificates Fundraiser

We have had grocery certificates available in the school office for the past five years and always seem to have trouble promoting this easy fundraiser. Sean Templeton, an ACS parent, has volunteered to market these certificates to make this program more effective for our school.

Sean and his wife, Jennifer, will be outside before carpool begins in the afternoon, selling the grocery certificates to you as you are waiting in the carpool line. Bring your checkbooks or cash, and you can purchase your certificates before you go to the grocery stores over the weekend.

For those of you that may not be familiar with this program, I would like to explain it. We can buy grocery certificates at King Soopers that can be used at Safeway also. These certificates are sold in $25 denominations and once you have purchased them, they are just like cash. The only difference is that ACS makes 5% from each sale! We all find ourselves going to the grocery stores regularly, and this is an easy, no pain way for us to raise money for our school.

Please plan to participate in this easy, no cost fundraiser!

The Governing Board met this Monday, November 14, 2005. One of the main topics addressed this month was replacing aging computers at the school to keep ACS competitive in this area. Duane Clark, ACS Governing Board Vice President, along with Robert Fortelka and Mike Hall, worked together on a plan to update our systems and software every 3 to 4 years. Mr. Clark planned to request $25,000 in additional funding from the PTO to help accomplish this goal, at the PTO general meeting the next evening.

Follow–up: At the PTO meeting, it was voted on and unanimously approved to fund the additional $25,000 for the computers. A HUGE thank you to the PTO for their part in helping keep ACS current in computer technology! THANK YOU!

More thank you's . . .
Another note of appreciation and many thanks go out to ACS parent Ron Kappus, who continues to help us with electrical needs at the school, at no charge. Adding to his volunteer hours is his only compensation.

In addition, Acoma Locksmith Service in Castle Rock saved ACS a bundle by replacing door locks/handles that weren’t working properly at far below the normal cost. We so appreciate their efforts!

And - did you notice the new “School Driveway” signs recently installed along Prairie Hawk Drive near the school? ACS parent Shelly Silla has been diligent in contacting city and county officials about the need for some sort of signage near our entrance to slow cars down. She was instrumental in getting attention in this matter and deserves our heartfelt thanks. Kudos to you, Shelly!

The next Governing Board meeting is set for Monday, December 12th at 6 p.m. at the school.

Barn Candle Orders Due

ATTENTION ALL ACS STUDENTS AND FAMILIES! Barn Candle orders are due on Tuesday, Nov. 22nd. This is the last weekend to get outside orders. You can turn your orders into the office.

The candles will be delivered to the school before Christmas break and distributed for your students to pickup in the school cafeteria. You will be notified beforehand.

REMEMBER, these candles make wonderful Christmas presents while helping out the 8th graders going to Washington D.C. Thank you for all your support!

Wish List Items Needed

We are in need of some “survival items” in the teachers’ lounge. We would gladly accept donations of paper plates, plastic silverware, paper cups and coffee. Thanks for helping us to “survive”.
