Dear Family and Friends of ACS,

Our school year seems to be just flying by--not only is it second quarter, it is almost Thanksgiving! I, for one, am very thankful for our students, parents and staff, as I believe we are working very hard this year to meet all of our students needs! I appreciate all of my staff and the work they do, and I also appreciate all the support we receive from our parents. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement this year!

I would also like to announce that Mrs. Christie Marble, our full-day Kindergarten teacher, has won the nomination to represent our school for the Apple Awards this school year. Congratulations Christie, we are all very proud of you! Mrs. Beth Midolo and Mrs. LaRae Seifert were also nominated for the honor to represent our school for this prestigious award. Hats off to both of you!

As I mentioned in an earlier Newsletter, our Governing Board sent home a very important letter about carpool recently. This letter is very important, because it is a reminder of how our carpool procedure runs, especially afternoon carpool. Afternoon carpool seems to be the time that we have had our ‘near misses.’ These ‘near misses’ could have actually taken a life of one of our students, or at very least, injured them. Our Governing Board’s reminder above should be enough for all of us to take our carpool procedure seriously. Our school procedures during carpool, during a lightning storm, etc. are for student safety, not to inconvenience parents. We apologize that this may not be convenient for all our parents, but that is not our job. Our job is to educate our precious students in the safest environment possible, and that is what we are doing by creating procedures adults and students both need to follow. Thank you for your support.

Dates to remember:

  • Friday, November 11- Teacher In-service Day- No students
  • Monday, November 14- Governing Board Meeting, 6:00
  • Tuesday, November 22- Dress Down Day
  • Wednesday, November 23- Teacher Comp Day for Parent/Teacher Conferences- School Closed
  • Thursday, November 24- Friday, November 25- Thanksgiving Break- School Closed

Have a great weekend!

Why is it in the 70’s outside but my calendar tells me it is November! I hope everyone is enjoying this nice weather we are having since we know it can’t last!

Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help with Vision and Hearing screening. I have been extremely involved with some District matters this week and, unfortunately, have not been able to get communication out to all who will be helping with this screening. Hopefully, I will get in touch with each of you either tomorrow or Monday at the latest to confirm our times and the schedule we will be following.

Mrs. Marsh-Rose needs two volunteers from each of the 5th grade classrooms to help with a special project. They will be making paper and she needs some extra hands to help with this project. The times are as follows: Mrs. Bigbey’s/Kelly’s class—Monday, December 5th, from 1:56 to 2:41 p.m.; Mr. Delimont’s Class—Tuesday, December 6th, from 1:08 to 1:53 p.m.; Mrs. Seifert’s class—Wednesday, December 7th, from 1:06 to 1:53 p.m. and Mrs. Gauer’s class—Wednesday, December 7th, from 1:56 to 2:41 p.m. If you can help during any of these times, please let Mrs. Marsh-Rose or me know what you can do.

A special thanks to Diane Bodiford who does a great job keeping our lost and found items moving. She takes a lot of time and effort to try to get the clothes back to their owners! Another very special person who does a great deal of volunteering for our school is Brenda Knight. She spends many hours completing large projects and donates this time back to our school---already 130 hours this year!

Please continue to log in your hours and try to keep them current. Remember, you are “Making a Difference” at Academy Charter!

No, we’re not encouraging everyone to put their cell phones in the freezer; emergency management officials across the U.S. are urging people to store the word ICE (In Case of Emergency) in their mobile phone address books and to enter the number of the person they want contacted in case of an emergency. This tool is helpful for emergency medical personnel that are responding to an accident or disaster and need to reach the person’s family. To enter more than one contact name, enter in ICE1, ICE2 and so on.

“Preparedness is essential in today’s culture,” said Fire Chief Art Morales. “The benefits of a cell phone can be expanded by preparing it for use as an emergency contact tool. I strongly support this program.”

The ICE campaign was launched in Britain in May and has gained momentum since the bombings occurred in London because victims didn’t have emergency contact cards, but most did have cell phones. It’s still smart for people to carry an emergency contact card in their wallet or purse; yet entering an ICE contact makes your cell phone an even more helpful tool.

As many of you know, we have a uniform closet here in the front office. These clothes are kept here in case of an emergency. We have had many emergencies lately and our supply is shrinking, especially the larger middle school sizes. It is so much easier to lend clothes from our closet than to have you come in for a simple clothing change. If your child has borrowed any of our clothes, please return them after they have been laundered. Thank-you for your support with this.

Please check the Lost and Found located in the school cafeteria. There are many lunch boxes and items of clothing in there that need to be brought home. Diane Bodiford will be taking everything that is left before Thanksgiving. Please check or have your students check for missing items

Library Class Scheduled

Come to our sick book clinic and learn how to repair library books. Instructions, supplies, fun and goodies will be part of the clinic. It will be held in the cafeteria from 9:00-10:30 on Friday, November 18th. Come, learn, have fun and get volunteer hours at the same time!
