September 12 - Governing Board Meeting, 6 p.m. to 7:30
•September 16 - Progress Reports Grades 3-8 Go Home
•September 20 - Picture Retakes
•September 23 - Teacher In-Service Day - No School
•September 26 - 3rd Specials Rotation For First Quarter- MS Only

Dear Family and Friends of ACS,

September has rolled in as quickly as ever and I would like to remind our community of fall and winter clothing that adheres to the Dress Code. Students can wear any jacket they would like into the building and out of the building; however, while in the facility, students can only wear the Academy Charter School hoodie sold at S & S Sports. No other hoodies adhere to our dress code policy. There are other Academy Charter School sweatshirts that fit our guidelines, also.

Another reminder: Dogs or other animals are not allowed in our building unless previously discussed with your child’s teacher for show and tell purposes. We have numerous students and parents who are allergic to different animals and would appreciate not having to deal with this during carpool; it is also a Board Policy. Thanks for adhering to our policies; they were made for good reasons!

PTO E-Books sales are over tomorrow. Please remember to have your students turn in their orders tomorrow, September 9th.

Dates to remember:

  • Friday, September 16- Progress Reports for grades 3-8 go home
  • Tuesday, September 20- Picture Retakes
  • Friday, September 23- Teacher In-service Day- No School
  • Monday, September 26- 3rd Specials Rotation for First Quarter- MS Only!

Have a terrific weekend!

I am so glad we have so many parents Making a Difference at our school this year!

I will be meeting with all of our classroom coordinators tomorrow at 8:30 in the cafeteria. This will be a short orientation meeting regarding responsibilities of classroom coordinators. We now have filled all of the positions for classroom coordinators--yahoo! The coordinators will be requesting help with various tasks in the classrooms and how you can Make a Difference at ACS. Some of the coordinators have their calendars set up--way to go!

Cindy Hazlehurst is heading up our Original Artworks program and she needs two people or one very industrious volunteer for a take home project. This volunteer or volunteers would assemble student packets. She will have the materials all put together by 9/12 and will need the completed packets back at school by 9/23. Let me know and I will pass your name to Cindy.

Just a reminder, we have new name badges for everyone--you will find them in the little file box on the volunteer table. Just get your badge out, grab a lanyard and you are ready to go into the school.

Also, you need to log any hours you spend volunteering. There is a log book on the table and you should find a page with your family name on it. If you don't have a page, please use the blank ones in the front of the book to make your own page and put it in the binder alphabetically. Thanks for remembering to log those hours each time; it is easy to forget the hours you work if you don't log them each time.

If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

Volunteer Coordinator

PTO Golf Tournament

We are still looking for players for a fun round of golf at Red Hawk Golf Course on Saturday, October 1st. Please contact Karen Anderson at 720-733-0501 for more information and to sign up.

Library Volunteers Needed

The library will be holding a book covering session Monday, September 12th, at 3:00 p.m. Once you have been trained, this is a great way to log volunteer hours from home by covering books for the library.

Hurricane Relief Sent

Thanks to all the families that participated in bringing in items for the Hurricane Relief effort. Mrs. DeGarmo's parents picked up our items on Thursday and they are on their way to the folks who need them. We ended up with 3 large boxes and 5 smaller ones filled to the brim. Thanks again for responding to this need so quickly.

ACS is in need of tables. We are looking for sofa tables or anything similar. We also need tables that are 5 feet long, folding or non-folding. If you have questions please contact Barbara Ireland at 303-660-4881 or email at irelandb@academycharter.org. Thank you.

Congratulations to you all. Everyone put in a lot of hard work for their speeches, posters, and all of the campaigning that took place.

Student council is already up and running as we start our first fundraiser. Starting September 12, we will be asking K-8th students to bring in $5 for the Red Cross hurricane relief fund. Student council hopes that each class will raise $100! All the classes that reach this goal will be presented with treats! The class that raises the MOST money for this cause will be presented with a root beer float and pizza party! Student Council has a goal to reach $2,400 to help the victims of this natural disaster! Thank you for your time and cooperation.

CHARTER SCHOOLS PROGRAM

September 1, 2005

Charter Schools and their state associations and resource centers interested in assisting victims of Hurricane Katrina can find additional information about ways to help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website,
www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18473

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003. Additional Hurricane Katrina resources can be found at http://www.fema.gov/press/2005

Cash Sought To Help Hurricane Victims, Volunteers Should Not Self-Dispatch

Release Date: August 29, 2005 Release Number:HQ-05-177
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Voluntary organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Gulf Coast states, according to Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response. But, volunteers should not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a
voluntary agency.

“Cash donations are especially helpful to victims,” Brown said. “They allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require.”

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food.

“We’re grateful for the outpouring of support already,” Brown said. “But it’s important that volunteer response is coordinated by the professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardest-hit areas where they are needed most. Self-dispatched volunteers and
especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm’s way and hamper rescue efforts.”

Here is a list of phone numbers set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers.
