- January 24 – Deadline for Budget Requests for consideration
at February 8 Budget Meeting
- January 26 – Teacher Breakfast – See
Social Report, below
- February 6 – Applebee’s Restaurant
Night – Benefiting
Science Labs. Don’t forget your voucher
- February 8 – 6PM – PTO
General Meeting, ACS Cafeteria
- February 15 – Chick-Fil-A
Restaurant Day – Benefiting
the 6th Grade

In December, the PTO opened up the last of the $42,000 in CD’s
voted in the September General Meeting to set aside for the technology,
curriculum, and field needs. A $10,000 CD was also included in
this number as an emergency fund, in the event of an unexpected
emergency or a lean year in fundraising. The PTO Treasurer will
continue to open $10,000 CD’s as money is accrued, in the
event the money is not spent for budget requests, etc., so that
the money raised throughout the year can earn interest instead
of sitting in a bank account.
Our Restaurant Night fundraisers have slowed down. Whether parents
and students need some new restaurant options or the communication
and reminders are not getting to you, we have seen a drastic decline
in these simple fundraisers. If you will recall, at the September
General Meeting, the public voted to give a grade $150 each month
through the Chick-Fil-A nights and the specials $150 each month
through Applebee’s. Unfortunately, with that commitment,
if the respective grade or special’s Restaurant Night does
not make the $150, the PTO must cover that commitment.
So, to hopefully spark renewed enthusiasm in the restaurant nights,
we plan to add new restaurants throughout the rest of the year.
So, please watch your PTO and ACS newsletters for reminders of
these nights and watch for new restaurants on the list.
Chick-Fil-A will remain in place, as this is a great opportunity
to help out ACS all day long, for breakfast, lunch or dinner, whichever
is most convenient for your family. However, in place of Applebee’s,
we will add other restaurants, so don’t miss out on the new
opportunities to help ACS!
Only 3 more PTO General Meetings for this school year.
Please don’t forget the procedure for submitting a budget
request.

 ACS
BUSINESS DIRECTORY NOW AVAILABLE
The PTO has recently distributed the new Parent Resource Directory
as a fundraiser promoting businesses owned by ACS Parents. The
Business Directory was sent to all ACS families in hard copy format.
You can also visit the ACS Website and click on Academy Charter
School Business Directory. Also, see the end of every PTO Newsletter
for the featured Business of the Month. Please help support businesses
owned by ACS parents. The current edition of the Business Directory
now serves as our prototype for future directories. If you would
be interested in advertising in the 2007-08 Business Directory,
or if you have thoughts or ideas, please contact Kindra Nelson
at nelsonk@academycharter.org or Greg Polashock at Greg@GregIsFinancingSolutions.com.
We hope to add many more businesses to next year’s Directory
and appreciate your input.
A very special thanks goes to Kindra Nelson, who almost single-handedly
completed this entire project! Great work Kindra!

Please remember that part of the twenty-hour volunteer
requirement for ACS families is to attend one PTO Meeting
during the school year!
Our next General Meeting is scheduled for February 8th.
Among other issues, the Board will propose an amendment
to the PTO By-Laws regarding officer elections.
The current PTO By-Laws states that the election of officers
for the following year shall take place in May of the preceding
year. However, at the last PTO Executive Meeting, the PTO
Board unanimously supported the idea that it would benefit
the new, incoming Board to be in place prior to the end
of the school year. This would allow both the old and new
Boards to work together for a fresh start for the new year.
The Governing Board has been holding their elections in
April, and the PTO Board proposes amending its By-Laws
to reflect the same time frame. Please see the below amendment,
and we invite you to attend the February 8th General Meeting
to place your vote for or against such amendment.
Proposed Amendment to Article 8-Nomination and Election
of Officers
Section 2
The election of officers for the following year shall take
place in April of the proceeding year. The election will
be held at a General Meeting of the organization of that
month. The Secretary and Treasurer will prepare the ballots
from nominations received. Voting by secret ballot, there
must be a space on the ballot for write-in candidates.
The Secretary and Treasurer and a general PTO member at
the meeting will tally the results and announce the winners
in the school newsletter one week after the election.
Agendas for all meetings will be posted on the PTO Board
just inside the school entrance at least five days before
each meeting
On a related note, PTO Elections will be coming
up in a couple of months. This is a great way to be actively
involved with the school and get your volunteer hours.
If you think you may be interested in joining the Board
for the 2007-08 school year, contact Misty O’Leary
at jimandmisty@comcast.net.
Please Attend PTO General Meetings!!
The Board noticed a marked absence of parents at this,
our first General Meeting of the year. The PTO Board
believes active parent involvement is vital. Since there
are only four scheduled General Meetings throughout the
year, and part of the ACS parent responsibility is to
attend at least one PTO Meeting during the year, the
PTO Board is pleased to work with the 8th grade class
in providing free babysitting services during our General
Meetings for the rest of the school-year.
Labels for Education - there has been a change in what
Campbell's wants. Unfortunately, Campbell's won't accept
only a front label anymore. They now want the UPC's on
most things...anything that has a paper label for the most
part. They still want lids like they did before. The website
is www.labelsforeducation.com.

Due to an unfortunate lack of facilities availability, the
much-anticipated Taekwando and Dance after-school programs
have been cancelled. The PTO deeply regrets not being able
to offer these popular activities this year.
On some brighter notes!… The Abrakoodle activities
held recently were very well received.
Our next program will be Mad Science – Motion,
Ocean, Commotion!! Students will experiment with the forces
that move planes, trains and automobiles… and dive
into the study of life under the sea! Classes
will run from February 22 through April 10 on Tuesdays,
with no class March 27, due to Spring Break. Early registration
deadline is February 16. The fee is $75/class and we only
need five participants in order to conduct this fun learning
activity. If you sign up by February 16, you will get a
$5 discount!

Hill at s.hill@beef.org or

PTO Social Committee coordinates Teacher Breakfasts on a
monthly basis.
Our next Teacher Breakfast will be January the 26th.
Other upcoming dates to remember - February Teacher Breakfast
is the 23rd, and the Teacher Luncheon during conferences
is the 8th and 9th of March.
Teacher Breakfasts are a great and easy way to not only
show support for our outstanding staff; it is also an easy
way to help satisfy part of your time commitment to the
school.
To learn more about helping, contact Allyson Ford at allyson4d@hotmail.com or by phone at 720-344-0105.
February’s Applebee’s Night is 2/6 and will
benefit our Science Labs. Don’t forget to take
your flyer, which will be included in Friday Folders.
The Chick-Fil-A Restaurant Night (2/15) will be for the
benefit of our Sixth Grade classes. As always, Chick-Fil-A
accepts ACS participants ALL DAY LONG! Everyone is welcome
to participate and, Eighth Grade Families, this is a
great chance to show your school spirit by literally
putting your money where your mouth is! Please
show your school spirit and take advantage of restaurant
nights.
This is an easy way to support the classrooms and departments… and
all you have to do is eat!!
Following is a brief summary of YTD Results. We do not
yet have December information.

Thank you for your continued support of this year-long
fundraiser that directly impacts the grades and departments
at ACS!

Don’t forget to check out the teacher “Wish
Lists” located on the ACS website. This is a great
way to support the teachers and departments for the extra
needs and wants that make the teachers jobs easier and
more creative, and ultimately make our students learning
experience even more fun.

ACS NEEDS YOU! If you have your own business or work for
a large corporation, ACS needs you. We need your support
in any and all areas you can think of. Many corporations
have the ability to match donations or make donations, and
you might not even know it. Sometimes all it takes is you
proving you are volunteering and your company can donate
to your school. We need you to go to your Human Resources
Department or your boss and ask them how that company can
give back to your school. Tell us what we can do to facilitate
the donation, and we will do all we can to assist your business.
We can provide any documentation needed for a tax write-off.
Please contact us and let us know how you and your company
can help ACS.
