Classroom Guidance Lessons

All classrooms K-8 have classroom guidance lessons on a monthly basis. During this time the counselor works with students on age appropriate social skills within the classroom.

Delivery of Instruction
Classroom guidance lesson are delivered through guided conversations, activities, and literature centered around social skills and Core Virtues.

Duration
A minimum of 30 minutes per month.

Location
General education classroom.

Participation
All students are encouraged to participate, however if a teacher, parent, or student believes the content of the lesson is too sensitive for the student, the student may be excused from the conversation, and/or participation in the activity.

Kindergarten-basic social skills through literature.

Concepts: making friends, being respectful, following directions, tattling vs. reporting, identifying and handling basic emotions.

First Grade–  Introduction to Impulse Control and a review of basic social skills through literature.

Concepts: Review of basic skills, identifying more complex emotions and reactions, basic level impulse control.

Second Grade-  Impulse Control

Concepts: defining and recognizing self control, reflective vs. impulsive, stopping before doing, thinking ahead, and natural consequences.

Third Grade: Teasing

Concepts: recognizing teasing vs. joking, identifying different forms of teasing,  identifying feelings associated with teasing, strategies for handling teasing, “I” messages, basic concepts related to peer pressure.
