Mrs. Johnson’s Newsletter
Month of May
A
Look Ahead:
Fri, May 20th Field
Day: On field
day, our afternoon kindergarten class will come to school during morning
carpool (8:15-8:25) and be dismissed at 12:40 along with the rest of the
school. (Our class will meet in the
Elementary Science Room- next to our classroom, since Mrs. Sander’s morning
kindergarten class will be in our room.)
We will not have a normal class day on Friday. It will be helpful to have lots of parent
volunteers come and help chaperone our class on field day. There is no limit on how many chaperones so
set your calendars! (More details to
follow.)
Tues, May 24th This will be our last normal school day in kindergarten
Wed, May 25th Kindergarten
Graduation: There will not be a regular
school day on Wed. Instead, students and
parents will come for kindergarten graduation in the auditorium from
9am-11am. After graduation, students
will be released to their parents and go home for the day. This will be our last day of school for
kindergarten students. Students will
not wear dress code on this day but will dress up for graduation. Also, instead of wearing graduation caps we
are asking each family to help their student create a hat that tells what they
want to be when they grow up. (Example:
teacher, fire fighter, police officer, baseball star etc.) We are asking for all hats to be turned in on
Monday, May 23rd. We will
keep the hats here and have them ready for graduation morning.
Kindergarten Graduation:
9:00-10:00 am (with a small reception after the ceremony)
Children should come dressed up for
this special occasion. Please bring your child to the classroom at 8:45
am and then go find a seat in the gym. Bring tissues and your cameras!
After receiving their diploma, your student will go and sit with you in the
audience and go home with you after enjoying refreshments. There will be
no classes for kindergarteners on May 25th (graduation day) or May
26th (the last day of school).
Important Information:
Homework: Starting in January, please begin
choosing one activity from the Kindergarten Homework Sheet to complete each
night along with one side of the math worksheet. On the calendar, initial
each night that your student completes his or her homework activity and math
worksheet. The calendar will be returned to me at the end of each month
for a homework grade. (Math homework sheets do not need to be returned to
me. Instead, indicate whether the work was completed by initialing the
homework calendar.)
Infinite Campus/Grades: Please
see the front office to get your Infinite Campus logon and password.
This
year ACS and the district will be using a progressive 1-4 grading scale, which
is designed to show student growth throughout the year. If your student has met the kindergarten end
of the year expectations, she or he will receive a 3. Most students will earn a 1 during 1st
quarter, a 2 during 2nd quarter, a 2.5 during 3rd quarter
and a 3 for 4th quarter.
These are the basic expectations for each quarter, although they will
vary by student. If a student earns a
higher number for a given quarter then they are working above
expectations. If a student earns a lower
number for a given quarter, then they are working below expectations. (A 4 indicates that the student is working
significantly above end of the year kindergarten expectations and will be
earned very, very rarely.) The only
exception is for social studies and science, since these are areas where the
students are learning knowledge rather than progressing through skills. In social studies and science, once a student
has mastered the knowledge presented they will receive a 3.
Change of Clothes: Please remember to keep a change of
clothes (ACS pants and underwear in a ziplock bag) in
your student’s backpack in case of an accident.
PE: PE class is on Wednesdays. Please send your student to school with non
marking tennis shoes/sneakers.
