Reading
Testing Day is Monday, August 30th. All 5th grade
students need to be in their classroom by 8:25 and testing will start promptly
at 8:30. Students need to bring a snack and a silent reading book to read if
they happen to finish early. Drop off time in the morning will be at the normal
time and following normal procedures.
Students will
remain in the classroom until 11:00 at which time the teachers will walk the
students up to the front of the school. At 11:00, students need to be picked

In the
Classroom…
We started math and are
establishing the routine and procedures. We took our Baseline Test and have
started our lessons. This year we have two different math class times and we
are also switching classes for math. We have already started this. Please ask your
child who their math teacher is and if you have math concerns, address it with
their math teacher. We are using the Saxon curriculum again this year and if
you’d like more information on the curriculum, please check out their website
at http://saxonpublishers.hmhco.com/en/sxn
m_home.htm . You should expect your child to have math homework each night
that we have a lesson. After five lessons, there is a cumulative test. They
might not have homework on test days. Students are also expected to do each of
the 30 problems for homework. The lessons spiral, so it is important that they
receive practice with all of these lessons.
We will also begin the
Language Arts Curriculum, Treasures, and are studying spelling, grammar, and
reading strategies. They are focusing on short vowel sounds, long vowels, and
next month will be words with /u/, /ar/, /er/, /or/, /ur/ and /ir/. In grammar we’re focusing on sentences, the types of
sentences, subjects and predicates, sentence combining, and complex sentences.
In Reading we’re working on skills of plot, setting, character, synonyms,
comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, homographs, context clues,
summarize, rhyme, and charts. We have been doing various writing activities
around summer and activities to get to know each other.
We’ve started our
Geography unit as well for Social Studies. We are studying features of the
United States, geography terms, and types of maps.
Back-to-School Night
Thank you to the parents who
were able to come to Back-to-School Night on Tuesday. We presented a Power
Point with information about the school and our classroom. Our plan is to email
this so you will have access to it and can refer to it as needed. Please watch for
it soon.
